Building an identity for a community redefining the culture of cycling.
The KOMPAS community is a team of likeminded individuals who share a passion for bikes, adventure, and creating meaningful lasting relationships. In crafting an identity to bring this brand to life I stayed loyal to its roots. Nature inspired color pallet, community focused photography, and a visual language steeped in the main conduit of this groups spirit – the bike! In addition to launching this brand, I was also involved in directing and editing a short film which chronicles the origin story of KOMPAS.

THE CHALLENGE
Create experiences that would foster genuine friendship and connect people on a deeper level.
Typical cycling culture lends itself to exclusive, tight knit, lycra wearing tribes. One’s ability to ‘keep up with the group’, limits their inclusion. If you’re not fast enough, or don’t look the part, you best pick another sport or find another group. We wanted to re-imagine what cycling culture could look like.
Whether your adventure’s take you into the middle of the forest, or just down the street to a local café, the challenge of this brand was to break down the barrier for adventure for KOMPAS community members, in a way that made all feel welcome regardless of who you are.
THE APPROACH
Deeply connect with community by creating a brand built around them.
Inspired by the patchwork nature of the KOMPAS community, I created a cohesive visual language for the brand that could translate seamlessly across physical and digital platforms. The spirit of the brand is projected through imagery of community members in action – displaying the comradery and adventure that you can come to expect from KOMPAS.
Partnerships with small businesses were formed to connect with the local community, strategic relationships with brands were formed to propel the KOMPAS brand, and I made a short film to use for sponsorship outreach, and to use across social channels for community recruitment.
THE RESULT
Deeply rooted community with genuine, meaningful relationships on and off the bike.
I successfully launched the KOMPAS brand in Spring of 2022 and have been able to leverage our niche in the Portland cycling community to create thriving and robust relationships with sponsors and brand partners. I helped to grow social channels by more than 400% in the past 12 months, and successfully directed, filmed, and edited a short film which premiered at a Patagonia event. In the past year KOMPAS has facilitated and guided bikepacking adventures for over 80 individuals. In addition to this, the KOMPAS community spreads further than just riding bikes. Friendships forged within KOMPAS have blossomed into meaningful community off the bike too. Regular brewery gatherings, haloween pumpkin carvings, group yoga classes etc. The KOMPAS community has become synonymous with friendship, and is where people are directed if theyre new to the city or seeking friendship.
